Sermon Notes

This week Pastor Deric continues our series The 180 with a sermon entitled “The Place of Repentance in Preaching” focussing on Acts 2:14-41

Acts 2:14-41
1. What does it mean that Jesus was “attested by God with mighty works”? (v.22)
2. What was the response of the people when they heard Peter’s preaching? How is this a sign of true repentance?
3. Read verses 41-47. Identify three other fruits that showed the people had truly repented.
4. In Peter’s sermon he quotes a prophecy from Joel (vv.17-21). Find the prophecy in the book of Joel. What is the context that prophecy was given in?
5. Joel talked about the people’s need to rend their hearts instead of their garments. What does this mean? How is this type of repentance different from the common outward display of regret we see today?
6. Read Leviticus 5:5. What role does confession have in repentance?
7. In your own experience, how has confession of sin and repentance become a blessing to you?
8. What did you find helpful or challenging about the message?

“Many think they repent when it is not the offense but the penalty that troubles them.” – Thomas Watson
