Sermon Notes

This week Pastor Deric begins the new series The New Birth with a sermon entitled The Necessity of the New Birth focussing on John 3:1-18Questions

John 3:1-18

ICEBREAKER: If you could have dinner with any person alive in the world today, who would that be?
1. What are some popular misconceptions and misuses of the phrase “born again” found throughout our modern culture?
2. Why do you think Nicodemus was so baffled by Jesus’ ministry [v. 2]?
3. Discuss some options for the writer’s comment that Nicodemus came to Jesus “by night”? Which option best fits with John’s overall message [v. 2]? Why?
4. What was the disconnect between Jesus’ statements and Nicodemus’ understanding [vs. 4, 9]? Is this still an issue for people today?
5. How do Ezekiel 36:25-27 and Titus 3:5 shed some light on Jesus’ comments about being “born from above”?
6. What difference does it make to you that Jesus claimed to have ascended into, and descended from, heaven [v. 13]?
7. What is your “born from above” story? Share it with others in your group.
8. What did you find helpful or challenging about the message?
