Sermon Notes

This week, Pastor Deric continues the series “We Believe” with a message titled ‘The Lord Jesus Christ’. The primary scripture references are from John 1.

We believe the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God and God the Son, who eternally existed in pre-incarnate glory. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, all-sufficient substitutionary death, victorious bodily resurrection,
triumphant ascension, present intercession, and personal and glorious return.

ICEBREAKER:What is the most stressful TV show or movie you watched? Why did you find it stressful?
1. John 1 is rich in the study of Christ’s identity [John 1:1-18]. As you meditate on these verses, who was Jesus and what did He accomplish during His earthly life [cf. Genesis 1:1; John 17:5; and 1 John 1:1-3]?
2. The Lord used Peter and John to heal a lame man and then they, in turn, used the occasion to proclaim the gospel, raising the ire of the religious authorities. Arrested, they were interrogated by the same Council members who condemned Jesus [Acts 4:5-6]. What did the apostles claim about Jesus that made Him unique [Acts 4:10-12]? Also consult Matthew 1:21; Acts 10:34-43; and 1 Timothy 2:5-6 for more insights.
3. Philippians 2:5-11 encompasses the entirety of Jesus’ existence. What phases of Jesus’ life do you see in this text, and what difference does each phase make in your life [cf. Mark 10:45; 2 Corinthians 8:9; and Ephesians 1:20-23]?
4. Who is Jesus according to Colossians 1:15-20, and what did He achieve during his earthly ministry [Romans 8:28-30; 2 Corinthians 4:6; and 1 Timothy 1:15-17]?
5. According to Hebrews 1:1-4, what is it about Jesus that makes Him the final revelation of God to humanity [cf. Matthew 11:27; 1 Corinthians 8:6; and Hebrews 12:2-3]?

6. In Revelation 5, we get a glimpse into the very throne room of God. Who are present in this heavenly scene, what are they doing, and what prompted the worship of the central Figure in John’s vision [cf. Daniel 7:13-14; John 1:29; and 1 Peter 1:17-21]?

7. What did you find helpful or challenging about this Sunday’s message?
“Jesus Christ became Incarnate
for one purpose,
to make a way back to God
that man might stand
before Him as He was created to do,
the friend and lover of God Himself.”
Oswald Chambers
