Sermon Notes

This week Pastor Deric continues his series In God We Trust from John 14-16 with a sermon entitled ”Stay Close to Jesus.”
John 15:1-11
Ice Breaker: Who do you have in your life that ‘fires you up’ or ‘brings out the very best’ in you?
1. Who or what was the symbol of the ‘vine’ described in the Old Testament? What passages can you use to support that view?
2. Define the three different types of ‘branches’ identified in this passage. What is it about the life of these people that differentiates them?
3. What is the ‘fruit’ that John is referring to here? Where else do we find that in Scripture?
4. Define ‘abide’ and name some specific things we can do to abide in Jesus Christ.
5. Describe the critical link and connection outlined in this passage between God the Father, Jesus Christ and Jesus’ disciples.
“The branch of the vine does not worry, and toil, and rush here to seek sunshine, and there to find rain. No, it rests in union and communion with the vine; and at the right time, and in the right way, is the right fruit found on it. Let us so abide in the Lord Jesus.” – James Hudson Taylor
