Sermon Notes

This week Pastor Deric continues the series The New Birth with a sermon entitled The Sign of Life focussing on 1 John 5:1-5.
1 John 5:1-5

ICEBREAKER: Does your first or middle name have any significance (or were you name after another family member or influential person)?
1. What are people in the world trusting other than Jesus? How would you compare these alternatives to Him [1 John 5:1]?
2. It is the nature of faith to always have an object. In other words, faith is always “in” someone or something. Why do Christians insist that faith in Jesus is the only way of salvation [1 John 5:1]?
3. How do we know Jesus alone qualifies as “the Christ” [1 John 5:1]?
4. What is the significance of Jesus being “the Christ”? What are the promises and hopes wrapped up in “the Christ” that encourage your walk with Him [1 John 5:1]?
5. Why are love for God and obedience to His commands inseparably linked [1 John 5:2-3]?
6. In what sense do believers in Jesus overcome/conquer the world [1 John 5:4-5]? Are you able to share how you have experienced this in your life recently?
7. What did you find helpful or challenging about this Sunday’s message?

“A transformed life is the greatest of all miracles. Every time a person is “born again” by repentance of sin and faith in Jesus Christ, the miracle of regeneration is performed.” (Billy Graham)
