ICEBREAKER: What is your favourite Olympic sport to watch? Why?
1. When the Apostle John wrote, “That which was from the beginning” [1 John 1:1], he was making an extraordinary claim about Jesus. What was that claim, and why does it matter [cf. Genesis 1:1; John 1:1-2; and John 1:14]?
2. Why are the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ disciples so significant to our Christian faith [1 John 1:1]? Also consider Acts 1:8; Ephesians 2:20; and 2 Peter 1:16-18.
3. John wrote that “our hands have touched” deity [1 John 1:1]. What does this mean, when did it happen, and why does it matter [cf. Luke 24:39-40; John 13:23-25; and John 20:27-29]?
4. In a culture that increasingly promotes death, how is the message of life announced in 1 John 1:1-2 bringing you encouragement and hope [cf. John 1:4; John 11:25-27; and John 14:5-7]?
5. According to 1 John 1:3, what is the essential nature of the Christian faith? What is it all about, and what difference does this make [cf. John 17:3; John 17:21; and 1 Corinthians 1:9]?
6. What is it about the nature of true joy that makes life worthwhile and gives purpose to our lives [1 John 1:4]? Also consult John 15:11; John 16:20-24; and 1 Peter 1:8-9.
7. What did you find helpful or challenging about this Sunday’s message?
