Sermon Notes

This week Pastor Deric begins our new series Forgiven to Forgive with a sermon entitled “Confessing The Truth”

1 John 1:5-10
Ice Breaker: If you could change places with a Bible character, who would you choose? Why?

1. Find 3 examples of confession and forgiveness from the Old Testament that parallel 1 John 1:9.
2. Verse 7 says that the blood of Jesus will cleanse us from all sin if we walk in the light. How does this tie in to verse 9?
3. What is the only phrase in the Lord’s prayer with a “condition” attached? (see Matthew 6)
4. God’s forgiveness of us is directly tied in to how willing we are to forgive others. Find three verses from the New Testament that support this.
5. What is the benefit of confession as noted in James 5:16? What other activity is confession paired with to experience this benefit?
6. What challenges or obstacles do you face when confessing your sins to others? What is something you can do to overcome them?
7. What did you find helpful or challenging about the message?

“When you forgive, you in no way change the past – but you sure do change the future.” – Bernard Meltzer
