Conversion Therapy Bill (C-6) Update

The issues surrounding Bill C-6 to Ban Conversion Therapy are critically important for all Christians to consider. We agree with the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, Canadian Council of Christian Charities and Christian Legal Fellowship about the danger of this Bill and the potential overreach of this legislation.
Below are some letters of invitation for us to become engaged from the EFC and Exodus Global Alliance. We encourage you to review this material, contact your MP and participate in the prayer initiative for our country and this issue.
Please contact the office with any questions.

Emails to Pastor Deric & Pastor Max:

The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada
Earlier this month, the Justice Minister reintroduced a bill to amend the Criminal Code to ban conversion therapy. The bill, now numbered C-6, is identical to the former Bill C-8 introduced in the last session of Parliament.

Coercive or involuntary efforts to change sexual orientation have no place in our communities, however, we have serious concerns about the potential overreach of this legislation.

The bill’s very broad definition of conversion therapy goes beyond widely discredited practices to include practices “designed to … reduce … sexual behaviour.”

Last week, the EFC sent a letter to the Justice Minister outlining our concerns and asking for changes to the bill. As our letter stated, “We are concerned that this legislation could, by imposing criminal sanctions, penalize and silence public speech and religious instruction on matters of sexuality and gender.

We are encouraging people to contact their MPs to ask for changes, and have provided an overview of the bill and a sample MP letter on our website at, as well as other information. Please consider contacting your MP and asking your community of faith to engage. It is vital that MPs hear from their constituents.

We are hoping the Evangelical community and others will reach out to elected representatives constructively and graciously to ask for changes to this legislation. The government is fast-tracking Bill C-7, which will amend the MAID legislation, but Bill C-6 has also been named as a priority and will come up for consideration quickly.

Just to remind you of an earlier initiative, the EFC co-produced a document which provides guidance for churches on conversion therapy this spring with the Christian Legal Fellowship and the CCCC. This was a collaborative effort that resulted in a helpful church resource.

This issue requires particular wisdom, grace and sensitivity. Please be in prayer for our public witness during these debates. As Evangelicals engage, we must seek to speak out of the compassion and love of Christ.
