Subject: Urgent Call to Prayer

Pastor Max,

Faith Beyond Belief and Exodus Global Alliance are calling people to pray for what’s happening in Edmonton. The email below sets out the efforts in Edmonton to enact a bylaw that will ban conversion therapy. The real purpose of the bylaw is not to ban abusive practices but to prevent churches, clergy and Christian ministries from responding to LGBT people when they ask for help.

The City of Edmonton (Canada) is set to ban what they define as “conversion therapy” this Tuesday. Their ban is everything we have been warning about: the way they define “conversion therapy” is so broad, it can include praying for a person who asks you to pray that their same-sex attractions be removed or reduced. Worse, the way the proposed motion defines the kind of “business” that would be prevented from this kind of prayer, could include any Christian organization, including your church. This means, pastors, priests, rabbis, imams or any other person who simply prays that God remove or reduce a person’s unwanted same-sex attractions, could be fined up to $10 000. Simply advertising that you offer help or showing a testimony will be treated as engaging in conversion therapy. John Carpay, Canadian lawyer, lays this out very well in this article:

Edmonton’s proposed ban on ‘conversion therapy’ violates privacy and choice of adults – The Post Millennial

If passed by Edmonton’s City Council, Bylaw 19061 would make it illegal to offer or provide “counselling or behaviour modification techniques, administration or prescription of medication, or any other purported treatment, service, or tactic used for the objective of changing a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or gender preference, or eliminating or …

This ban has national implications. The motion passed at the Edmonton City Council will provide a template for the federal government, which has the power to make the ban a criminal matter. If that happens in Canada, a Christian or any other person who prays or helps, could be subject to a fine or even jail time.

Please read the email below & the article in the link. Then join me in praying that this will be stopped.

Subject: Urgent Call to Prayer

As many of you know, the City of Edmonton is set to ban what they define as “conversion therapy” this Tuesday. Their ban is everything we have been warning about: the way they define “conversion therapy” is so broad, it can include praying for a person who asks you to pray that their same-sex attractions be removed. Worse, the way the proposed motion defines the kind of “business” that would be prevented from this kind of prayer, could include any Christian organization, including your church. This means, pastors, priests, rabbis, imams or any other person who simply prays that God remove a person’s unwanted same-sex attractions, could be fined up to $10 000. Our friend John Carpay, and Canadian lawyer, lays this out very well in this article:

We’ve also included a link to a PDF of the motion that was available on the City of Edmonton website last Monday. It has since been taken down, but we fear the wording could even be worse when it is passed this Tuesday.

However, this ban has national implications too. We have heard that the motion passed at the Edmonton City Council will provide a template for the federal government, which has the power to make the ban a criminal matter. That’s right, in Canada, a Christian or any other spiritual person who prays against homosexuality, could be subject to a fine or even jail time.  This is not an exaggeration. As you know, at the last time I was at the Edmonton City Council meeting, LGBT leaders made it clear they are targeting churches as well.

It is urgent then that we pray for our country and our province. This Monday night, we’re asking Canadians to pray wherever you may be. Please ask God to intervene and give His people wisdom as to what to say. Pray also for councillors that their eyes may be opened to how discriminatory this bill is and pray that God reach the hearts and minds of the LGBT activists who are pushing for this law. Only God can change their hearts and we need to pray that God show them a love so great, they will realize the only identity worth embracing is Christ.

One last prayer request: I will be interviewed by a national TV broadcaster after the vote on Tuesday. I desperately covet your prayers so that God give me the right words to speak to a hostile reporter. We’ll share more details as to when the interview will be aired but this could be a way for us to give the biblical view a national profile.

Because of the urgency of the situation, we are also organizing two emergency prayer meetings in Alberta, one in Calgary and one in Edmonton, both at 7 PM. If you are in the area, please join us as we seek God’s will and His Spirit to guide us. Please see the details below.

I don’t know if we can reverse this vote now, but we can definitely stand in prayer for our country and seek God’s guidance as to what we should do next.

Thank you so much for your commitment to share God’s life-saving truth to a hurting world

Lord bless,

Jojo Ruba

For more information on this matter please see the references below:

Canadian Lawyer John Carpay, is president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF.ca), and he has written an opinion piece spelling out the bill and the issues surrounding it in an article published a few days ago in “The Post Millennial”:

Faith Beyond Belief has provided more information about the proposed ban including a video that explains some of the intricacies:
